I've been using it for four months now. I haven't looked back. Complaints by other reviewers that Parallels only supports two versions previous to the current don't hold water as that is the same as Apple for OS X. Not all that expensive. This is annoying, but you can turn this off. However, it grows the space as needed until the maximum designated. New versions of Parallels may not be immediately available when OS X changes versions.

It works flawlessly, with one annoying exception. Originally I was unable to print. Tech support eventually solved this. Problem is, each morning when I open Windows, I have to reset the default printer to the Parallels virtual printer. When I exit out of Parallels, the default printer check mark shifts to a grayed-out printer icon. Apparently there's no way to fix this.

I called, and after 15 minutes was speaking with a tech. They're located in Manilla, Philippines. He was pleasant enough, but not especially adept at dealing with new issues.

It was I who suggested we re-download the printer driver, and later, that we reboot the computer. This was needed, but didn't solve the issue. To his credit, he was able to take it from there. However, I wasn't thrilled that he was all too willing to quickly settle for the work-around.

I cajole him to try other things, which he did, but they proved futile anyway. I may try upgrading, even thought I despise navigating in 8.

But I really don't spend much time in Windows, and once there, don't need to navigate much. However, resetting the default printer once a day is easier than re-booting in Boot Camp. So buying Parallels was the right move. I decided to try Parallels 9 and am glad I did. The software installed without a glitch and was ready to use right out of the box. I have since installed four operating systems and they all work perfectly.

When setting up a virtual machine, the software gives the option to set it up in coherence mode integrated or separate. The added icon in Apple's dock makes for quick access to your list of virtual machines. Depending on your host machine's capabilities, the software can easily run several platforms simultaneously.

Other reviews have complained about renewing or upgrade fees. I've only had the product installed for two months so I can't comment on those but I just received a notice of a new version available, for free! Along with connection enhancements, this new version states that; "Subscriptions are now per-user rather than per-remote-machine. You may now access up to 10 computers with a subscription. I would recommend Parallels if you're in the market for a good virtual platform software. Steve B.

In practice we found both worked as advertised with storage drives at least, if with a performance hit compared to native Mac connections.

The biggest delta advertised by Parallels is in disk performance, said to be 40 percent better than Parallels 8. A useful synthetic benchmark to check processor and memory speed is the cross-platform Geekbench 3, although our Windows 7 guest machine was unable to run it in Parallels 9. More recently the 9. We ran a battery of other tests using the same VM of Windows 7 Ultimate bit, and found a gentle lift in most areas.

Compare the results with arch-rival VMware Fusion and we see a wider gap, in Parallels favour. In essential system speed, it must be said that either of the main virtualisation packages today offer ample speed, close to a native install. Parallels 9 fixes the flakey rendering and plays DX10 graphics cleanly, if slowly. We also tried the Unigine Heaven benchmark with both apps, using again DirectX 9 mode.

Average scores were about equal between Parallels 9 and Fusion 6 but with dreadful rendering in the latter that lost much quality. Scores here were Besides offering official support of Windows 8 and 8. Even before the sticking plaster of v8. If you do find Metro apps useful, you can also use them windowed within the classic desktop, to save you having to move to and fro inside the schizophrenic operating system.

Another new feature available to Windows VMs is the automatic mounting of your iCloud folder as a network sharepoint, without even being asked about it. The same facility is offered for anyone with a Google Drive or Dropbox account. Installing VMs from disk images has become easier in Parallels 9, with the app automatically finding potential guest.

You can also install from a connected USB thumbdrive now too. Running Parallels provides a relatively painless way to run Linux, with a graphical script to install the essential tools for better performance and integration with the host Mac.

In our experience though, even the latest Drag-and-drop is still missing, although cut-and-paste of basic text works, if not files and folders. Most troubling though is the continued absence of graphics integration.
